To what should have been a typical work day/night for the young CT Terrance: it becomes all but. 

Conductor Steve being incapable of "keeping it in his pants", has much to do with script: as representing dialogue into building the unfathomable of characters and events...

 Low brake pressure... Extremely low aggregate for a down pouring rainstorm... Their train is burdened by some added weight... 

The railroading crew has to make it into track 'siding’ and avoid collision with the incoming Tannersville train... 

The storm carries much more water; accompanied with thunder and lightening... The train derails and there's a chemical spill-over of cosmetic something: ingredient?

Either way, there are the squirrels, a rabbit, a deer, a skunk, coyotes, and a bear- oh damn.
